Once Upon a Time

Posted on 23 August 2011

Is the intention of art to evoke emotion, to tell stories, or to challenge people and stretch their imagination? The truth is,  art can do all of these things and more—especially the work of artist, Tom Towhey.
Tom Towhey is fascinated by the “psychological effect color, shape and use of space can have on the human mind.” His playful and fairytale-like paintings trigger emotional responses connected with memories and dreams—each piece like the wildly fanciful chapter of a storybook. In a Land, Far, Far Away

Not only does Towhey play off of classic mother goose and children’s stories like Alice in Wonderland, he also creates characters, builds forests, develops worlds and adds smart and comical twists to true stories in history. The tongue-and-cheek titles such as “Malice in Wonderland” and “Amelia Air Heart & the Monkey on Her Back” emphasize the lightheartedness and wit of this marvelously unique artist. Hidden Treasures

Beyond whimsy, these paintings are layered in a way they become interactive for the viewer. Hidden images often reveal themselves once on-looking eyes have truly studied—sometimes over significant periods of time—a Tom Towhey piece. “I received a phone call from a collector who had acquired one of my paintings some five years prior. She had just discovered a leprechaun in the lower left hand part of her painting. Thankfully, she was delighted and hoped to find more.” [caption id="attachment_814" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Click photo to see more of Tom Towhey's artwork "][/caption]

Tea Time

Another reoccurring object you may find in Towhey’s paintings is the teapot. When speaking with Tom he explained that drinking tea with his grandmother was of great significance to him—an event he always looked forward to and adored. Featuring these strong and pleasant memories, he paints lively and dream-like teapots—most often as the focal point of the piece. The bright colors and spirited brush strokes brings a refreshing youthfulness to each piece of art. Master Mind

Tom Towhey’s talents do not stop at ‘artist as storyteller’—he has also mastered the art of landscapes, sculpture, and abstract. The brushwork in his landscapes has intense movement and his extremely creative sculptures showcase the innovation and imagination of a brilliant artist. Each of his works are well thought out, and composed in such a beautiful, mature way that the shadows and highlights look as though they happen authentically—like in nature, one flower petal overlapping another. Happily Ever After

The main reason I adore Tom Towhey and his work is because when I look at his pieces I feel like I could walk into them like Alice’s looking glass and fall through the other side into a world comparable to Wonderland, Neverland and Narnia—the world of dream and dreamer. Each piece is a great adventure, an extraordinary journey in which I am thrilled and privileged to tag along.
