AN Artist Journey: Doug Powell
ADC FINE ART IS PROUD TO INTRODUCE YOU TO innovative artist Doug Powell WHO creates the illusion of three-dimensional form through the use and arrangement of recycled, or up cycled, computer keyboard keys.
FROM RECYCLED to beauty
When it comes to designing and crafting mosaics, or as some refer to it as contemporary pointillism, Doug keeps it old school. The whole process is manually done from sketching the subject matter out in pencil to gluing each key down in a horizontal plain from the bottom of the substrate to the finish at the top, much like how a printer works. Recycled keyboards are collected in large pallets before he starts sorting through them. Over the last 12 years, Doug has collected almost a million computer keys or approximately 10,000 keyboards. His process of placing each key based on its value under the fixed lighting in his studio at that time is what ultimately brings out the character of the subject.
An INTRODUCTION TO ACA, ART COMES ALIVE
Doug learned about ADC Fine Art Gallery while participating in the Spectrum Art Show during Art Basel Miami in 2018. He reached out to us and learned about our annual international art competition, Art Comes Alive. He carefully selected a sampling of his latest computer key mosaic creations and entered. Then Doug and his wife, Marci attended ACA 2021's awards ceremony on November 6th. He won Best in Show that evening. Doug states, "I have to say that we met quite a few extremely talented artists from all over the USA. My wife and I are now friends with several fantastic artist that live on the West coast of Florida. I took top award Best in Show with my Martin Luther King computer key mosaic portrait and for that I am grateful."
SALES AT RED DOT MIAMI!
A few short weeks later, Doug partnered up with the ADC in Miami during Art Basel and featured two large iconic portraits, MLK Jr. and David Bowie. Both pieces were purchased and ADC won Best Booth Award. Doug had an amazing time with Litsa and Sylvia and even got to meet the clients that fell in love with his work.
